Notes - Dow’s Vintage Ports are only produced in years of exceptional quality and represent only a very small part of the total company’s production in that year. On average only two or three times every ten years are the weather conditions sufficiently good to allow for the making of Dow’s Vintage Port. Dow's Vintage Ports are drawn from the companies' finest vineyards; Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta de Senhora da Ribeira. Each property contributes to the Dow’s unique and distinctive style. When young, Dow’s Vintage Ports are purple-black, austere, complex and intensely concentrated, full-bodied and balanced with very fine peppery tannins.
"This is an extraordinary house that seems to have been particularly successful with its vintage port since 1977.The 1983 is rich, concentrated, very fruity, and magnificently perfumed, suggesting that it is going to mature early, long before the 1977" 90 Points Robert Parker, Wine Buyers Guide.
"Very stylish and big, with a classy balance of fruit and tannin. Deep ruby-purple, with a multidimensional nose of perfume and grapes, full-bodied, tannic and tightly knit." 94 Points, James Suckling, Wine Spectator.
"Quite a dark hue to this wine, with dense, chewy fruits on the nose. Rich and structured on the palate, which is reserved rather than lush or open. A huge core of tannin, especially on the finish. Sweet and dense fruit, and lovely extract. This is mouthfilling and savoury. Good length. Drinking well now despite that tannin, but will benefit from another 5-10 years in the cellar." 18/20 The Wine Doctor.
