Jordan Cobbler's Hill

Wine information: Gary and Kathy Jordan have been making world-class wines since 1993 on a farm with a history going back over 300 years. He's a geologist, she's an economist - together this husband and wife team is a phenomenon. Gary's parents, Ted and Sheelagh, bought the 146 hectare Stellenbosch property in 1982, and embarked on an extensive replanting programme, specializing in classic varieties suited to the different soils and slopes. From the Jordan hillside vineyards one has spectacular panoramic views of Table Mountain, False Bay and Stellenbosch. Gary and Kathy worked internationally for two years, refining their high-energy instincts with practical experience. They returned home to build a cellar in 1992. The Jordan philosophy combines the vineyards’ natural assets with innovative management, creating a profound expression of terroir. Cool hillside vineyards planted to classic varieties, and a modern family-run winery have combined to produce distinctive wines displaying the ripe concentrated fruity accessibility of the New World, with the complex elegance of classic wine. Cobblers Hill is the ultimate expression of an outstanding wine from the Stellenbosch terroir. The 2005 is a blend of 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Fermented in overhead retort-shaped, stainless steel fermentors at 28°C. Three pump-overs were done daily over the fermenting cap.After pressing, the wine was racked to barrel where it finished malo-lactic fermentation. A selection of the best barrels was made and the wine spent a total of 26 months in 225 litre French oak barrels. After a light filtration the wine was bottled. Complex dark chocolate, black cherry and cassis intertwine with opulent blackberry fruit, and hints of mint and toasty vanilla. This is a big mouthfilling wine, with densely layered ripe tannins, beautifully balanced and refined – the ultimate expression of the Jordan terroir. Received 5 stars in the 2010 Platters Guide. "A savory, masculine nose of blackcurrant, cloves and spice lead into flavors of black fruit, spiced sausage and toast in this sexy Cabernet. Flavors are meaty, spicy but soft. Balanced but has a plucky, spicy backbone. Pair with lamb, steak, savory dishes." 90 Points, Wine Enthusiast.
