Campbells Sixties Block

Wine information: The Campbell family winemaking heritage began in 1870 when Scotsman John Campbell made his first wine from the Bobbie Burns vineyard. The fifth generation of the Campbell family, brothers Colin and Malcolm, have maintained the commitment to quality and growth and today there are about 64 hectares under vine. Campbells is also one of the inaugural members Australian First Families of Wine (AFFW). First planted by Malcolm Campbell in the early 1960's, the Sixties Block contains a single row of many obscure and interesting grape varieties. Campbells produce an intriguing blend from this mature vineyard that includes Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Zinfandel, Souzao, Tinta Cao and Carignan. The wine is aged for a period of 12 months in a mixture of new to three year old premium French and American oak.

Tasting Notes: Campbells Sixties Block is a dark plum colour. Complex, fragrant nose of black cherry and raspberry scented fruit. Appealing herbal notes sit in the background with regionally distinctive earth and mineral characters also evident. Medium weighted with leafy cherry and raspberry fruit up front. There is a lot going on through the mid palate with savoury herbal notes, black olive, coffee bean and an earthy character that speaks of the wines Rutherglen origins. Texture is a feature with grainy tannins and mocha oak drawing out to a long, fine finish.
