Notes - Feudi San Gregorio is widely recognised as one of Italy’s most dynamic and innovative wine estates. Based in Irpinia, Campania, it has single handedly pioneered wine-making in the region, investing everything in its strong belief in Campania’s plentiful indigenous Italian grape varieties. Made from 100% Aglianico sourced from vineyards within the Taurasi, Pietradefusi and Sant’Angelo all’Esca regions with deep volcanic ash deposits with clayey, sandy and alluvial elements under a surface bed rich in humus. Harvesting is by hand during the last ten days of October, the whole bunches are de-stemmed and crushed, then macerated on the skins for 10-12 days during fermentation which is in steel at a controlled temperature of 26°. Malolactic fermentation is then encouraged and the wine is aged in new French barriques with a medium toast for 18 months. Brilliant ruby red in colour with a garnet tinge around the rim. Shows deliciously fragrant aromas of black cherry, cinnamon and nutmeg, vanilla and anise. Full bodied and rich with a plump mid-palate and balancing structure to the black fruit and spice flavours. Finishes dry and assertive with lingering vanilla oak flavours. An inspired choice to accompany game and roasted red meat. Delicious with a venison and pheasant, stout braised pie or ham and pea risotto.
