Notes - Celler de Bordalás García, founded in 1998, has an estate of 8 ha in Gratallops y Llo. Rafa Bordalás, the owner and oenologist, is the most reputed winemaker in Priorat after Alvaro Palacios (L’Ermita). Although an agronomic engineer, he works with the heart following no static rule or book, in fact quite an anarchist. He works with old Cariñena vines aged over 95 years, Garnacha vines of about 35 years and Cabernet, Syrah and Merlot vines of about 8 years. His wine, Gueta-Lupia, produced from a blend of old and younger vines, while very powerful, has a style and quality of lightness and elegance. It bears the traditional mineral hallmark of many Priorat wines. 55% Garnacha, 35% Cariñena, 5% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. 16 months in new French Allier oak except for the Cariñena which is aged in American oak as Rafa believes it gives more rounded tannins and richer jammy flavours. Incredibly dark cherry colour, splendid and very intense nose with rich blackcurrant fruit and hints of minerals and slate, massive & mouthfilling vibrant blackcurrant & bramble fruit with complex notes of spices and minerals, great structure and depth with elegant ripe tannins that end in a long and memorable finish. Absolutely superb, a classic. May be laid down for 5 years or longer.
