Notes - The Guigal Domaine was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the ancient village of Ampuis, home of the wines of the Côte-Rôtie. These vineyards are over 2,400 years old and you can still see the small terraced walls characteristic of the Roman
period. Etienne Guigal arrived in this region in 1923 at the age of 14, he made over 67 vintages. His son Marcel took over in 1961. Today, Philippe Guigal (Marcel's son), oenologist, is the third generation to continue the family endeavour to be at the service of the greatest wines of the Rhône Valley. United as a family, Bernadette, Marcel and Philippe work together to develop this family owned and run enterprise. In 2006, Marcel Guigal was awarded Decanter Man of the Year for his outstanding contribution to the development of the Rhône area. 95% Marsanne and 5% Roussanne. Straw yellow in colour with golden tints. Very complex nose with oaky floral notes, hazelnuts and yellow fruit. Initially very full-bodied attack on the palate leading to fleshy fruit and a round palate. A balanced palate with complex aromas and a roundness which is very characteristic of Saint-Joseph. May be aged for 10 years. This wine is a unique expression of the excellence of the lieu-dit « Saint-Joseph » appellation and these vineyards are from amongst the very best of this up-and-coming appellation in the northern Côtes-du-Rhône. These very slopes lent their name to the Saint-Joseph appellation. The label was designed by Roger Pfund, a Franco-Swiss artist who is a specialist in the design of bank notes. "Even better is the 2001 St.-Joseph Lieu-Dit St.-Joseph blanc, which tastes like pure honeysuckle interwoven with rocks, tangerines, and white currants. With full body as well as refreshing acidity" - 89 - The Wine Advocate by Robert M. Parker - 12/04.
