is a red wine form the Douro made by the Lavradores de Feitoria wine co-operative. Lavradores de Feitoria
was founded in 1999 by a group of owners of some of the best vineyards and quintas in the Douro Valley, with a clear and strong commitment to excellence. This producer is an association of 15 quintas, and this is one of their top wines. Feitoria’s blood brother of Niepoort Charme, so trodden, with stems, from old vines. The result is poised, high toned Douro red, quite the opposite of the Douro blockbuster model. Mushroom and forest fruit on the nose, a super-fresh palate, and long finish. Very much Dirk Niepoort
inspired red, from ancient mixed vines, trodden with stems, and fermented in lagares. If you thought the Douro’s best wines were only ever a variation on the power game, this is quite the opposite, with a lofty and layered elegance. Douro for Pinot Noir fans. A blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional.
Meruge is a very dark red / purple colour and the nose is very ripe and deep with plenty of red fruit, spice and chocolate notes. The wine is very well strutured with good tannin, hints of green pepper and sweet red fruit on the palate. Very good finish. This is a big, rich and complex wine but perhaps with a bit more subtlety than some Douro reds.
"Slightly less ripe aromatics but there’s a smoky, earthy, mineral edge to the fruit. Sultry, soft strawberry and redcurrant palate and silky, coffee bean oak and sweet, supple tannins add polish." 4 stars, 18 / 20 Decanter Magazine
