Lavradores de Feitoria Meruge
is a red wine from the Douro made by the Lavradores de Feitoria wine co-operative. Lavradores de Feitoria
was founded in 1999 by a group of owners of some of the best vineyards and quintas in the Douro Valley, with a clear and strong commitment to excellence. This producer is an association of 15 quintas, and this is one of their top wines. Feitoria’s blood brother of Niepoort Charme, so trodden, with stems, from old vines. The result is poised, high toned Douro red, quite the opposite of the Douro blockbuster model. Mushroom and forest fruit on the nose, a super-fresh palate, and long finish. Very much Dirk Niepoort
inspired red, from ancient mixed vines, trodden with stems, and fermented in lagares. If you thought the Douro’s best wines were only ever a variation on the power game, this is quite the opposite, with a lofty and layered elegance. Douro for Pinot Noir fans. A blend of 80% Tinta Roriz with a blend of other old vine grapes including Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional. The wine is aged in French oak.
Lavradores de Feitoria Meruge is a beautiful ruby red color with reddish hues. The aroma is fresh, very fine and complex. Very fruity, dominated by aromas of red fruits, spices and surrounded by tobacco and coffee, fruit of his long aging in oak barrels, giving it finesse and elegance. In the mouth, the attack is fresh, elegant, flavorful, with tannins, but smooth and velvety, pointing out the fruity character. Very rich in taste, has a balanced acidity and an end soon and persistent.
Food & Wine match:
Meruge is a great match for red meat dishes, duck and game birds, as well as soft and semi-cured cheeses.
"Slightly less ripe aromatics but there’s a smoky, earthy, mineral edge to the fruit. Sultry, soft strawberry and redcurrant palate and silky, coffee bean oak and sweet, supple tannins add polish." 4 stars, 18 / 20 Decanter Magazine
