Notes - Vergelegen, meaning "situated far away" was purchased in October 1987 Anglo American Farms and extensively refurbished with carefully selected treasures of early Cape Furniture, objets and textiles representing 300 years of Vergelegen's existence. More importantly a complete vineyard re-planting project began in 1989. The award-winning Vergelegen winery is unlike any previously designed in South Africa. The octagonal design of the winery reflects that of the octagonal walled garden laid out by Willem Adriaan van der Stel in 1700. 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. The wine shows a rich ruby colour with almost an opaque center. Cassis, pencil lead, spice and red berries, abound on the nose. Matured in new French oak for 18 months the fruit, tannin structure and fine acidity indicate a wine of balance and finesse reflective of the Vergelegen terroir.
