Wine information: Maison Trimbach (F. E. Trimbach) is, without question, one of the greatest names in wine-making in the French region of Alsace. Based in the town of Ribeauvillé, the Trimbach family has been involved in wine making over 13 generations. The business was founded by Jean Trimbach in 1626 in Riquewihr and has since moved twice, in the 1840s to Hunawihr and most recently to Ribeauvillé after World War One. Maison Trimbach has an enviable reputation for the quality of its entire range. Trimbach owns many vineyard located around Ribeauvillé (with predominantly limestone soils) but they also act as a negociant for local growers . Trimbach does not use the Alsace Grand Cru designation for any of their wines (although most of their top wines come from Grand Cru vineyard sites). The company is perhaps best known for its top-end dry Rieslings made in the traditional Alsatian style – structured, elegant, fruity, balanced and long-lived. Trimbach’s top wine is the iconic Clos Ste Hune, a dry Riesling produced from a special plot in the Rosacker Grand Cru Vineyard. Trimbach wines are also listed in every single one of the 26 Three Michelin Star restaurants in France, and are present on the very best restaurant wine lists across the globe. Trimbach only makes its Reserve Personelle range from grapes harvested in top years and the choicest vineyard plots and the results are rich, weighty, opulent wines which can take many years to develop their full potential. This cuvee is from the Grand Cru Osterberg vineyard. The grapes are picked by hand and pressed very gently in a pneumatic press. The juice runs into the cellar by gravity and clarifies naturally prior to fermentation. The juice ferments in stainless steel at controlled temperature for 2-3 weeks. In this case the fermentation stopped naturally and some very little residual sugar is now balanced by good ripe acidity to give this wine a beautiful balance. These grapes were picked at excellent richness level, around 14° potential alcohol. The wine is not oak-aged, as the Trimbachs believe that wood gives nothing to their wines, the salient characteristics of which are extreme purity and concentrated fruit. Bottling is early to preserve freshness and wines then bottle-aged before leaving the winery. 100% Pinot Gris.

Tasting Notes: Trimbach Pinot Gris Réserve Personelle is rich, weighty, opulent wine which can take many years to develop its full potential. A massive wine that fills the mouth with succulent fruit. Ripe, but not too much, this wine is rich, complex and fat, with a beautiful structure and length.

Food & Wine match: Fruitiness, dryness and smokiness are its typical characters make this Pinot Gris a great companion to food. It goes together with terrines, foie gras, smoked fishes and fish in sauce, and especially salmon and white meats. It is also the ideal companion to spicy, oriental and asiatic foods thanks to its exquisite fruitiness which confers fullness and perfect harmony.
