Wine information:
The Neethlingshof estate in Stellenbosch takes its name from its 19th century owner, Marthinus Laurentius Neethling, who served as mayor of Stellenbosch and was a member of the Cape Parliament. A member of the Biodiversity & Wine Initiative, acknowledged for its protection of indigenous habitat, the 378 ha winery has set aside 127 ha for conservation. It cultivates both red and white varietals, with the bias marginally in favour of whites. The major red varietals are Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Malbec and Pinotage. The predominant soil types found on the farm are Oakleaf and Tukulu. This 100% Pinotage is sourced from dryland vines established in deep red soils that is rich in organic material and amply feeds the roots. Planted in 1997, the vines are established on north-westerly-facing slopes, 120m above sea level, in soils originating from decomposed granite. After destalking and crushing the mash was fermented. Fermentation took place in rotation tanks at 25 - 28°C over seven days, after which the skins were pressed. Once malolactic fermentation had taken place, the wine was matured in French and American oak barrels for 14 months. The Owl Post Pinotage is a lovely dark, red colour. The nose has aromas of ripe fruit and banana aromas with a background of vanilla oak. It has a rich and velvety palate with ripe fruit and vanilla flavours. Ready to enjoy now or can be matured for another decade. Excellent served with red meat dishes and game, especially hearty stews and casseroles.
