Notes - French born winemaker Bernard Portet and American businessman John Goelet founded Clos Du Val in 1972. After traveling the world for two years in search of wine growing regions of great potential, Portet selected two sites in the Napa valley - 130 acres in the Stag’s Leap District for growing Bordeaux varietals and 180 acres in the cooler Carneros region to launch Clos Du Val’s Pinot Noir and Chardonnay program. The winemaking team now led by John Clewes are building further on an already outstanding reputation, utilising the very best Napa fruit to produce handcrafted, estate wines famed for their balance, elegance and complexity. The late maturing Cabernet Sauvignon is the benchmark variety for wines from the Stag’s Leap district, where cool night-time temperatures and the reflected heat of the Stag’s Leap Palisades during the day provide ideal conditions. Clos Du Val’s flagship estate wine, the 2004 Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon is actually a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Cabernet Franc. It is deep purple-black in color and greets the nose with vibrant aromas of ripe black fruit balanced by a hint of dried herbs and toasty oak. The wine has a rich, powerful entry, filling the mouth with intense black fruit and spice. With its velvety-smooth tannins, this Cabernet illustrates Stags Leap District terroir. The long, lingering finish is characteristic of Clos Du Val’s winemaking style. Enjoy now or cellar for at least 10-15 years.
