Wine information: In 1918 Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka Whisky, embarked on a long voyage to Scotland and, after enrolling at Glasgow University, became the first Japanese person ever to study whisky making. He took chemistry courses at the university and apprenticed at distilleries, learning first-hand from craftsmen and received training as a blender. Masataka would later become known as a master blender. After returning to Japan in 1920 Masataka began work for a company who would produce Japan's first whisky. In 1934, Masataka struck out on his own and established Nikka Whisky and built its first distillery in Yoichi, Hokkaido, which he had always considered to be the ideal site in Japan for whisky-making. This was later joined, in 1969, by the Miyagikyo Distillery, also in northern Japan. Of Nikka’s two malt whisky distilleries, Yoichi produces rich, peaty and masculine malts. Yoichi 10 Years Old gets its distinct aroma and body from direct heating distillation, in which the pot stills are heated with finely powdered natural coal—the traditional method that is rarely used today, not even in Scotland. In Yoichi, Masataka Taketsuru saw numerous reminders of Scotland, and this convinced him that this should be the home of Japanese whisky. Yoichi was selected because of its clean air, perfect humidity for storage, and abundant underground water supply filtered through a layer of peat. Additionally, its location only a kilometre from the sea, gives its whiskies a light salty note. This whisky is amber with gold reflections, the nose is fresh and clean with toasted and spicy notes, apple and apricot aromas. There are also light peat and smoke notes. The palate is perfectly balanced and well rounded, there are vanilla and tobacco flavours integrated with oaky and fruity notes. The finish is long lasting and has remarkable fruity, oaky and floral notes. "Best Whisky Of The Year", Whisky Magazine 2002. "...Whisky from one of the World's top half dozen distilleries", Michael Jackson.
