Notes - Giant Steps is owned and operated by a small team - Phil, Allison and Harry Sexton. Phil had originally established Devil's Lair vineyard in Margaret River in the 1980s. In 1997 Phil and his wife, Alison, took the "Giant Step" of selling up and moving to the Yarra Valley where they dreamed of creating a small, specialised cool climate vineyard together, as a family - thus Giant Steps Winery was created (named after the 1959 John Coltrane album of the same name on Atlantic records). This wine is 95% Merlot with the balance a blend of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon all grown on the higher rocky slopes of Giant Steps. Tasting Notes - "Sappy, crushed-leaf, black-olive and soy sauce aromas; ripe fruit and oak deftly married with a cassis cabernet-like background. Medium-bodied with ample soft tannins to close. A very good merlot, clean and well-made. Drink now to five years." Huon Hooke, Published in Sydney Morning Herald, 28th February 2006.
