Notes - Launched in 2004, Mitchelton Parish is a Shiraz Viognier (10%) made in the traditional style of ‘cofermentation’. This immediate integration of the varieties allows the Viognier to draw out the colour of the Shiraz and add lifted and intriguing aromas and flavours. These two varieties originated in the Rhone Valley, they are purposely blended to give the Shiraz lifted aromatics, greater complexity and a softer finish. Shiraz was sourced from the heritage “1969 Block”. These vines are located adjacent to a long reach on the Goulburn River on deep ochrered alluvial soils. These gnarly looking vines are non-irrigated and struggled to produce a mere 1 tonne per acre of itensely concentrated berries. The Viognier was harvested on the same day from A Block situated on a hungry rise in the heart of the Mitchelton Estate. Scanty yields ensured full flavour was achieved to add vibracy and aromatics to the co-fermented blend. Aged 18 months in mostly French barriques. Fragrant dark cherry, custard and musky aromas lead to an enveloping embrace of cherry ripe and christmas pudding flavours framed by melted chocolate like tannins. 92.4% Shiraz,
7.6% Viognier.
