Wine information:
The Guigal domain was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the village of Ampuis. His son, Marcel, took over from his father in 1961. The Guigal family owns vineyards in Condrieu and in the Côte-Rôtie with illustrious plots in many famous appellations. The wines are made and aged at 12th century Chateau d’Ampuis located in the northern Rhone. In the summer of 2003, in an effort to improve quality and control over all aspects of wine making, Guigal opened an onsite cooperage. The cooperage at the Château d’Ampuis works in partnership with the cooperage at Chagny managed by Seguin Moreau. This 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier blend offers a dense, expressive and intense nose. It’s a characteristically tannic and racy wine, with aromas of prunes, blackberry and vanilla. The palate is powerful, concentrated and structured, with a muscular vintage identity that’s due to the hot climate. ""The dark ruby/plum-tinged 2000 Cote Rotie Chateau d’Ampuis, which spends 30 months in oak, is good, but not nearly as perfumed, deep, or impressive as the 1999, 2001, and 2003. It offers aromas and flavors of sweet cassis intermixed with hints of frying lard and dried herbs intertwined with supple tannin. Although superficial, it is a seductive, rich, concentrated effort" 89 Points, Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate.
