Notes - After every vintage, a reserve of very concentrated and powerful red ports from Fonseca’s own vineyards is laid aside to age in oak casks. Those that have reached their peak after over forty years are then blended together for balance and finesse, and to ensure consistency of quality and style. Fonseca 40 Year Old is traditionally served in the classic port wine glass at the end
of a meal, as an accompaniment to dessert or with walnuts or almonds. However, it is also delicious at other times of day, on its own or with nuts, biscuits or cake.Fonseca 40 Year Old is a unique tawny port of great age with the characteristic olive ochre colour of the very oldest ports matured in cask. Decades of evaporation have concentrated this extraordinary wine almost to an essence. Nose of incredible power and density, unashamedly dominated by an all-pervading aroma of fine oak wood. Here, the typical aromas of cask ageing abound: spicy smells of clove, cinnamon, nutmeg and licorice, warm roasted coffee smells, and an intense nuttiness reminiscent of walnut and hazel. These aromas recur in the mouth, where the wine rolls off the tongue almost like treacle. An incredible lengthy finish, leaving a mouthful of lasting, mellow spicy flavours and a persistent impression of fine seasoned oak.Tawny Ports of age will not improve once bottled; they should be served at room temperature or barely cool at the end of a meal with nuts or not overly-sweet desserts. Ideal for a 40th Birthday or a Fortieth Wedding Anniversary.
