Chartreuse is a French liqueur made by Cathusian monks at Voiron near Grenoble. It is a based on grape spirit flavoured, using a secret recipe, with 130 plant extracts, herbs, flowers and secret ingredients and is named after the Grande Chartreuse monastery where it was originally produced. At any one time only 3 monks know the exact secret formula! There are two main types of Chartreuse - Green and Yellow. The former is coloured green (from extracts including chlorophyll) and the latter is less alcoholic and has milder and sweeter flavours. More information be found at the official Chartreuse Website.
