Cardenal Mendoza Angelus Orange Liqueur is made by Bodegas Sanches Romate in Jerez. Sanchez Romate is a Spanish Bodega that specialises in fine Sherries and particularly good Brandy de Jerez .
Bodegas Sanchez Romate is a high quality producer of both Sherry wines and Brandy de Jerez. The company was established by Juan Sánchez de la Torre in 1781 to produce fine wines. Over two hundred years later Sanchez Romate is one of the oldest bodegas in Spain and one of the remaining wineries in the Jerez Designation of Origin that remains under independent family ownership. A brandy was first produced in 1887 under the strict auspices of the Consejo Regulador – the Brandy de Jerez regulatory body – and the even stricter controls of the bodegas of Sánchez Romate Hnos SA itself. The fabulous Cardenal Mendoza Solera Gran Reserva has become the family’s flagship brand, although their Sherries follow closely behind! Cardenal Mendoza is still made according to the unique traditions specific to Jerez de la Frontera.
Cardenal Mendoza Angelus was created by the Sanchez Romate foreman who “wanted to transmit the fragrance of the orange blossom that engulfed the Bodega’s patio every spring.” This is the bodega’s take on a liqueur brandy, similar to the French Grand Marnier of La Grande Josiane, and is made by macerating the finest bitter Seville Oranges, lemons from Valencia, cardamon and cloves in fine Brandy de Jerez. The maceration of the natural ingredients and the distillation process take place in a prestigious old distillery founded in 1824 and famed for its traditional Bain-Marie process. This is then left to marry and age in ex Sherry butts for some time prior to release.

Mahogany in colour, enriched with glossy and luminous amber highlights. Its nose features an amalgamation of intricate citrus and spiced notes which evoke sweet aromas of dried fruits. The forepalate comprises a velvety explosion of citrus tones, with hints of bitter oranges and toasted nuance, resulting in a finish which is sweetened, long-lasting and seemingly endless.
Serve over ice, drink neat or use in cocktails.
