Description

Jurtschitsch wine estate in Langenlois with its winery building dating from the 16th century and the 700 year old natural cellar labyrinth ranks among the most impressive wine estates in Austria. Since 2009, the grapes for the family owned vineyards have been processed in a certified organic way. Jurtschitsch has committed themselves (since the 1970s) to leaving our vineyards as natural as possible. Planting vines densely, meticulous foliage work and crop reducing measures are the key pre-requisits of winemaking. Meanwhile the estate has been converted to controlled organic methods. The Loiserberg vineyards are south and south east facing and boast a crystalline rock soil with a thin layer of humus that provides the vines with a poor substratum; this forces the roots to infiltrate deeply into the craggy subsoil in order to get the nutrients they need. Loiserberg is the westernmost elevation in the direction of the Waldviertel and has a very special microclimate: while its sun-exposed terraces are pounded with extreme heat, the vines are also flooded with cold air from the harsher Waldviertel. This mixture of cold and hot air contributes strongly to the development of exotic aromas. Fully ripe grapes are selectively harvested by hand into stackable crates during the middle of October and the crates are then immediately brought to the press house the whole clusters are carefully pressed at a very low pressure. The cleared juice is then slowly fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks at approximately 18c so as to preserve the delicate aromas and flavours of the grape. After resting on the fine lees the wine is bottled at the beginning of March of the year following harvest. Jurtschitsch started switching over to compost and plant litter based fertilizers as early as the 1970s and the vineyards are all organically certified since 2009. 2009 also saw the launch the “Erste Lage” classification. The proudest traditional vineyards in Austria’s Danube winegrowing region have joined forces to create The Federation of Traditional Winemakes (OTW) with the goal of establishing a vineyard site classification system. Erste Lage can be translated as a “first class site” and this wine is one of the first to carry this classification.
