La Mancha Spanish Wines Sampler – 6 x 75cl bottles

I wanted to call this “Le Vin from La Mancha” but it was basically mangling too many languages!

For years, La Mancha wines had a really bad reputation in the UK, mainly due to the copious amounts of really cheap red plonk that the supermarkets used to peddle in the 1990s. I recall, vaguely, drinking it in my student days and it makes me wince just thinking about it. Today there are some serious winemakers in the La Mancha including many members of the Grandes Pagos de España (GPdE).

Manual Manazaneque Suarez cut his teeth working for his father’s estate (one of the very first Grandes Pagos de España) but has now branched out on his own with the intention of demonstrating that quality wines can be made from local grapes in La Mancha. He works mainly with Cencibel, the local name for Tempranillo.

Bodegas Calar are another small project (20 hectares) who, again, mainly concentrate on Tempranillo. Perhaps their most interesting selling point is that their vineyards are located on the the only volcanic derived soils in Spain situated on the Campo de Calatrava volcanic field. These soils have a marked influence on the styles of their wines.

Garnache specialists Bodegas Jimenez-Landi are located to the south-west of Madrid and most of their wines come under the Mentrida DO. recognized as being expert producers of Garnacha using 21st century wine-making whilst respecting history and tradition.

Please follow the links below for more information on the individual wines in the New La Mancha Spanish Wines Mixed Case.
