Description

Chateau Duhart Milon was ranked as a 4th growth wine in the famous Bordeaux Classification of 1855. At that time it was the only 4th growth in the Pauillac wine growing appellation.

Chateau Duhart Milon is a fourth growth located in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux and is owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). It borders Chateau Lafite Rothschild itself. The property has been managed since 1962 by a single team that, due to the proximity of the two properties, oversees both Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Duhart-Milon. The 1855 classification recognized the quality of Duhart-Milon’s terroir by ranking it as the only 4th growth wine in Pauillac. It was owned by the Casteja family from the 1830s and the family remained in possession of the estate during the second half of the 19th century and the first part of the 20th century. Château Duhart-Milon was then one of largest Pauillac estates with around 50 hectares. The estate was sold in 1937 and went through five other owners in a short space of time until it was acquired by Rothschild family in 1962.

Chateau Duhart Milon then consisted of 110 hectares, of which only 17 hectares were vines. Major construction projects were then undertaken in the vineyard: draining, uprooting and replanting, the purchase of adjacent plots, and reintegrating the vineyard by trading plots. New cellar and vat rooms were installed in Pauillac. Today, the 76 hectares of vineyards consist mainly of a single block of vines on the west side of Château Lafite Rothschild, on the Milon hillside, which runs along the Carruades plateau.  The soil is fine gravel mixed with aeolian sand on tertiary limestone subsoil. The vineyards are planted with 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot. The average age of the vines is 30 years.

Chateau Duhart Milon 2017 is a blend of 76 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 24 % Merlot. Aged 14 months (50% new barrels). 20,000 to 25,000 cases per vintage.

Tasting Notes

At bottling, “Deep, dense colour. Nose fairly closed but suggesting substantial hidden potential. Notes of liquorice and cherry stones. Good attack on the palate, full-bodied and supple, despite the wine still being in “shock” from the recent bottling. The palate offers the same aromatic notes as the nose, filled out with fresh red fruit. Superb, elegant length. This vintage’s classic character is already apparent, even though it is only just beginning to age in the bottle.”
