Australia still remains one of the UK's favourite wine-producing countries. Its dominance is, in part, due to the marketing and sales success of top wine brands such as Jacob's Creek, Penfold's (including the World-famous Grange) and, more recently, Yellowtail. Today there is more importance placed on terroir and wine regions than there was in the past, with some of the most modern wine-making techniques in the world and careful use of new barrels. There is also a general move to cooler climate regions.

Two of the best red wine-producing regions are the Barossa Valley and the Coonawarra Valley. The Barossa is famous for Shiraz and old vine Grenache with producers such as Torbreck Vintners, with Runrig and Descendant, and Grant Burge for wines such as the Meshach Shiraz or his Balthasar Shiraz Viognier. In the cooler climate region of Western Australia the Margaret River is the premium area, where Cape Mentelle is one of the leading wineries. There are some other notable wine styles in Australia. Two of the best dessert wines are the De Bortoli Noble One Botrytis Semillon and the rather unusual Black Noble.
