The wine producing area of Alsace mainly produces whites wines (the only red varietal grown is Pinot Noir which is often served chilled). The noble grape varieties Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat are the only ones allowed in Grande Cru and Late Harvest wines, though Auxerrois and Pinot Blanc are also grown. The majority of wines are very aromatic, unoaked styles which make really good food wines - some go surprisingly well with spicy Asian and Pacific Rim food. There are very good producers, such as Trimbach who make the World-famous Clos Ste. Hune Riesling, Domaines Schlumberger and co-operatives such as Cave de Turckheim. The two late harvest dessert wine styles are Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles (SGN).
