Madiran is situtated in the heart of the Midi-Pyrénées and is surrounded by white wine growing areas such as Jurançon and Pacherenc. Only red wine is produced in this region which is on the outskirts of Basque country to the south of Armagnac. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are grown here but the main, traditional grape variety is Tannat. The wines tend to be very dense, dark and tannic when young but have the ability to age greatly to produce flavoursome, aromatic reds. One of the best producers is Domaine Berthoumieu, owned by Didier Barré.
