The Rhône wine region is probably the most diverse wine region in France. The climate is very hot and sunny and the soil is very stony with lots of granite which helps retain heat. The main grapes in the Côtes du Rhône region are Grenache, Syrah and Carignan for red wine, Clairette, Ugni Blanc and Grenache Blanc for white wine as well as Viognier in Condrieu. Over 75% of wine production is red. There are a wide variety of styles such as full-bodied Syrah-based wine such as Côte Rôtie, in the north, and Châteauneuf du Pape, in the south, where up to 13 different grape varieties may be blended. Other famous appellations are Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Chateau Grillet, Gigondas and St. Joseph. The majority of red wine is sold as Côtes du Rhône AOC. Top producers include - Guigal, Chapoutier and Jaboulet.
