Georgia is known as the birthplace or "cradle of wine" and some of the earliest planted vines were believed to be cultivated there. There are dry white wines, produced from grapes such as Rkatsiteli and Mtsvane, and lighter, fruity reds which are mainly produced from grapes such as Saperavi and Dzelshavi. Probably the most popular style is the medium-sweet to sweeter style of reds and a lot of production is given over to this. Old Tbilisi Alazani by Georgian Wines is a good example of this style and makes a very nice apéritif when served chilled.
