Germany is the producer of some of the world's top white wines, all made from the Riesling grape. The main wine-producing areas are Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Rheinhessen, Nahe, Pfalz and Rheingau. The best wines are usually in the QmP (Qualitatswein mit Pradikat) category in which no chaptalisation, or addition of sugar takes place. Cheaper wines are labelled QbA or Tafelwein. Labels have the name of the producer, village and vineyard name and the degree of sweetness of the wine - in ascending order of sweetness (QmP wines only) - Kabinett, Spatlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese (there is also Eiswein made from frozen grapes). All German wines retain the varietal character of Riesling (except for those not made from Riesling!) but there are also differences due to regional and local (vineyard) conditions. There are very good single estate wineries such as Burklin-Wolf, Fritz Haag and Schloss Johannisberg. There is also a small amount of red wine made in Germany, usually from the Dornfelder grape.
