Wine has been made in Sardinia (Sardegna) since ancient times and it is thought that the Phoenicians first introduced wine to the island. Main types of red wine include Cannonau, a rich red, good with meat dishes and those made from Carignano such as the Riserva Rocca Rubia by Cantine di Santadi who also make the superb Terre Brune. One of a new breed of red wines is a joint venture between Cantine di Santadi and Tenuta San Guido, the producers of the Super-Tuscan Sassicaia, called Barrua. Perhaps the best-known white wine is made from Vernaccia but there are other white wines such as the dry Crabilis, which is made from Vermentino grapes, by Pala. There are also dessert wines which tend to be made from the Malvasia grape.
