The most famous wine from Sicily is probably Marsala which is a sherry-like wine (in that it is a fortified and slightly oxidised style). Fortified to around about 20%, it is usually made from indigneous Grillo, Catarratto or Inzolia grapes. There are many different styles, from dry to sweet, but the best Marsalas are often labelled "vergine" which means it will have been aged at least 5 years in oak cask. Marsala is also a key cooking ingredient used in veal dishes and many puddings. One of the best producers is Cantine Florio. There are also some good wines made in Sicily some using local grapes and some using more international varieties. Planeta make a very good Syrah and Burdese (local dialect name for Cabernet Sauvignon) whilst Tasca D'Almerita make a very good white called Leone D'Almerita which is a blend of Catarratto, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
