New Zealand's wine growing area is split into approximately ten major wine-growing regions. The main areas on the North Island are Northland, Auckland, Waikato / Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawke's Bay and Wellington. On the South Island the main areas are Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury and Central Otago. The three most important varieties grown are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir but Merlot, Syrah, Malbec, Riesling, Gewurtztraminer and Pinot Gris are also grown. Some consider that the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world is produced in the Marlborough region - top producers include the ultra-desirable Isabel Estate,Cloudy Bay and Villa Maria. Canterbury, Central Otago and Martinborough are regarded as the best areas for Pinot Noir with top wineries including Canterbury Cellars' St. Helena, Mount Difficulty and Palliser Estate respectively. NZ also makes very fine sparkling wine, one of the best being Pelorus Vintage Brut from the aforementioned Cloudy Bay.
