Wine is produced in all of the American states except Alaska and Hawaii, but the majority of quality wine-production is based in California with some in Washington State, Oregon and, to a lesser extent, the Eastern States. The first European settlers found many new varieties of vine in the USA and originally called it Vinland, however, they found that they preferred their indigenous European grapes and took many of these with them. Perhaps the two most famous Californian wine regions are Napa and Sonoma but there are hundreds of smaller areas producing quality wine such as Paso Roble, Arroyo Seco, Monterey County, Alexander Valley, Carneros and Amador County. Top producers include St.Francis, Sebastiani and Bonny Doon in California, Chateau Ste. Michelle in Washington State and Domaine Drouhin in Oregon.
