Cognac Maxime Trijol Masterclass with Jean-Cyrill Vincent

Wednesday 8th November 2023

We were pleased to receive a visit from Jean-Cyrill from Cognac Maxime Trijol who has been the Area Export Manager (European Brand Advocate) for many years. What he doesn’t know about Cognac isn’t worth knowing! It was an evening filled with exquisite flavorus, captivating knowledge and delightful company.

Jean-Cyrill’s passion for Cognac was clear and it was great that he shared his wealth of knowledge and expertise with all of us that attended. Jean-Cyrill’s engaging introductory talk gave us an informative insight into the history, production process and unique characteristics of Maxime Trijol’s fine Cognacs as well as some truly staggering figures about Cognac sales and production in general.

However, the highlight of the evening was, naturally, the actual Cognac tasting. We tasted the following Cognacs allowing us to compare not only the effect of the ageing process, comparing VS, VSOP and XO, but also the contrast in styles of Cognac from the Grande Champagne region with those including Cognac from other regions of Cognac.

Cognac Maxime Trijol VS Classic 40% 70cl

Cognac Maxime Trijol VSOP Classic 40% 70cl

Cognac Maxime Trijol XO Classic 40% 70cl

Cognac Maxime Trijol VSOP Grande Champagne, 1er Cru de Cognac 40%

Cognac Maxime Trijol XO Decanter Bottle, Grande Champagne, 1er Cru de Cognac 40%

Jean-Cyrill also showed some very special samples at the end of the tasting including Trijol Ancestral, Dry No 1 and Dry No 2 as well as a truly remarkable 15 year old cask strength bottling (we have ordered two bottles of the six bottles available for the UK!).

It was great to try the Classic range up against the Grande Champagne range, which emphasised the dryness and delicacy of the Grande Champagne Cognacs. All of their eaux de vie are distilled on the lees which lends more oily and rich character. In terms of sales the Classic VSOP (Fins Bois and Petit Champagne) was the hit on the night. Personally I much preferred the dryer style of the Grande Champagne VSOP.

About Maxime Trijol

Maxime Trijol is a distinguished Cognac house with a rich history dating back to 1859. Located in the heart of the Cognac region, the Trijol family has been passionately producing exceptional Cognac for six generations. Their commitment to traditional craftsmanship and attention to detail has earned them a stellar reputation in the industry.

Today, the house boasts twenty-two 2,500-litre stills. Maxime Trijol is different in that the brand cultivates its own vines, as well as distilling and ageing Cognac. In this way, Maxime Trijol oversees all the steps in the cognac production process: growing the grapes, distillation, ageing and bottling.
