Georgian Wine Tasting at Lysses House Hotel

A Taste of Georgia with Kaha Guliashvili of GeoNaturals

This was a superb evening presented by Georgian wine expert, Kaha Guliashvili of GeoNaturals. The evening consisted of a short pre-dinner wine-tasting of four wines followed by a Georgian inspired menu created by Chef Clive Wright of Lysses House Hotel, menu below, with wines carefully matched to each course. The meal included a fabulous leek terrine served with a very tasty, albeit Anglicised version of, Georgian cheese bread and a rump of lamb with Georgian spices. The Terra Georgia Saperavi Qvevri and the lamb, in particular, was a great pairing. A semi-sweet red wine, Kindzmarauli, was served with a cheeseboard which I thought went particularly well with the blue cheese, the Stilton. It is worth considering as an alternative to Port with cheese, perhaps if you are looking for something with a lower ABV.

Kaha presented a range of wines from iconic Saperavi red wine to the aromatic white wines and also an Amber (Orange) wine made from Rkatsiteli. The wines featured included wines from esteemed wine producers including Guramishvili’s Marani, Terra Georgia, Chateau Askana, and KTW. Kaha brilliantly spoke about Georgia’s long and rich winemaking traditions and the use of “qvevry”, the underground, clay amphorae used in traditional Georgian wine making. Kaha effortlessly shared his wealth of knowledge about Georgian wine and is extremely knowledgeable,  not surprising for someone who was helping his grandfather make wine at four or five years old! It was both an educational, fascinating and engaging evening.
