Description

Bodegas Caro Amancaya Malbec / Cabernet Sauvignon is a red wine from the Mendoza region of Argentina made by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and Nicolas Catena. The wine is very much French-inspired.

In 1998, the idea of forming a partnership between Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and the Catena family was raised. The Catena family had been producing wines in Argentina for three generations. Their passion for Malbec and their broad knowledge of the high altitudes soils of Mendoza were essential to select the best vineyards. DBR (Lafite) brought more than a centenary know-how on the Cabernet Sauvignon culture and on the process of assembling different grapes to obtain fine wines whilst Catena shared its experience with Malbec and the high-altitude terroirs in Mendoza, The joint venture was to be called Bodegas Caro. Today Caro is run by Nicolas’ daughter Laura and Baron Eric de Rothschild’s daughter Saskia de Rothschild. They aim to continue improving the vineyards, wines and the overall sustainability of the whole operation.

Amancaya is the little brother to the world famous Caro and Petit Caro. Like its stablemates, is a fine balance between Argentinian grape varieties and terroir and Bordeaux style. Grapes are sourced from selected plots of old vines in Lujan de Cuyo just outside Mendoza, and also from Altamira, further South. In Lujan, soils are quite varied depending on how close vineyards are to the mountains or Mendoza River, and tend to form alluvial layers of loam, rock, and gravel. In Altamira, vineyards are planted at 1000m above sea level, on the ancient alluvial bed of the Tunuyan River.

Bodegas Caro Amancaya is a blend of Malbec, the quantity varying from 60 to 70% depending on vintage, and 30 to 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are sorted on tables and efore being placed in stainless steel tanks for fermentation. Regular pumping-over ensure a gentle extraction of the tannins. After malolactic fermentation, 50% of the wine is transfered into French oak barrels for a period of 12 months, and 50% is placed in concrete vats.

The 2021 is a blend of 69% Malbec and 31% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Amancaya is the  the native Quechua name of  a flower, local to the Andes and found in the Mendoza area.
