Description

Antinori Pian Delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is a single estate wine made by one of the most famous and oldest wine companies in Italy.

Antinori have been producing wine in Tuscany for six centuries and was founded in 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member, of the “Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri”, the Florentine Winemakers’ Guild. Antinori are probably most famous for producing on of the original Super-Tuscan wines, Tignanello, and have estates throughout Italy (Peppoli and Castello della Sala) and the rest of the world.

The family’s Pian delle Vigne estate is located some three and a half miles south west of the town of Montalcino itself in the Val d’Orcia. The estate was acquired by the Antinori family in 1995 and is named after the 19th century railway station which is situated in the property. The estate comprises of 184 hectares in total, 65 of which (some 160 acres) are planted with vines. These are planted at an altitude of between 130 and 200 meters (440-660 feet) above sea level and with an exposure which is principally to the south-east. The soils consists primarily of clay, calcareous material and is rich in very fine gravel. The philosophy behind Antinori Pian Delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino is to age the wine in large casks that preserve the exceptional integrity of the Sangiovese grape and impart the characteristic vibrant elegance of Brunello to the wine. The first vintage, the 1995, was released in 2000.

Antinori Pian Delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino is made exclusively from 100% Sangiovese grapes which are known in Montalcino as “Brunello” (which literally translates as “little-brown”). After harvest the grapes are de-stemmed, crushed grapes and fermented for fifteen days in stainless steel tanks. The wine then goes through a complete malolactic fermentation and is aged in oak casks with a capacity ranging from 800 to 2100 gallons (3000-8000 liters) for more than two years. The wine is also aged in bottle prior to release.

Tasting Notes

From Antinori: “Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino is an intense ruby red color. Its complex nose offers notes of ripe red fruit and hints of plums and dates; its bouquet is completed by sensations of Mediterranean herbs, floral aromas of violets, a hint of spicy ginger and hot pepper chocolate. On the palate, its entry is soft and silky. An extremely pleasant wine that delivers balance and harmony with pleasing freshness that gives the wine length and richness of flavor. Notes of licorice and cocoa powder, together with ripe red fruit, define its finish.
