Aperol is a classic, bitter Italian aperitif. Aperol has a bright orange colour and  a unique taste, thanks to the secret recipe, which has never been changed. It is most commonly served as an Aperol Spritz.

Aperol was first created Fratelli Barbieri in Padua in 1991 and its bittersweet taste immediately found its way into the hearts of Italians. Today it is made by the Campari Group. The recipe is a closely guarded secret. It is made with infusions of selected ingredients including bitter and sweet oranges and many other herbs and roots in perfect proportions. Aperol’s strength is in its low-alcohol content of only 11% ABV. Amongst its ingredients are bitter and sweet oranges and herbs and barks including gentian, rhubarb, and cinchona. It is similar in style to Campari, it is sweeter but less alcoholic.

Aperol is most commonly served as an Aperol Spritz. Try the official recipe of the Spritz Veneziano from the “International Bartenders Association”:

  • Combine 6cl Prosecco
  • Followed by 4cl Aperol
  • Build into an old-fashioned glass filled with ice
  • Top with a splash of soda water
  • Garnish with half orange slice

Aperol is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
