Atlantis Rose is a brand new rose wine from Madeira. It is made from the Tinta Negra grape variety, more commonly known as Tinta Negra Mole, it considered to be the “workhorse” grape in the production of Madeiran wine. Atlantis Rose is bottled as a DOP Madeirense (DOP = Denominacao de Origem Protegida Madeirenses).
Atlantis Rose is produced by The Madeira Wine Company. The Madeira Wine Company is the umbrella company name for a collection of Madeira wine brand including Blandy’s, Cossart Gordon, Leacocks and Miles Madeira. It is owned by the Blandy family and the CEO is a seventh-generation Blandy, Chris Blandy. As well as Atlantis Rose, there are also two new white wines, a non reserve, and a reserve Verdelho. The wines are made by Francisco Albuquerque, the award-winning winemaker of Madeira Wine Company who has won best fortified winemaker in the world three times!
As mentioned above, Atlantis Rose is made from Tinta Negra. The grapes are sourced selected growers on the warmer southern vineyards of the Câmara de Lobos and Campanário areas. After harvest, the grapes were carefully selected, destemmed and cooled to 14ºC. The must was then macerated on the skins for 24h in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 18ºC. Following separation of the skins, the fermentation got under way at a controlled temperature of 18ºC. The whole vinification process takes 12 days. The wine was then left to rest in cooled stainless steel vats for 4 months, after which it was bottled to retain its freshness and fruity aroma.
The name Atlantis was inspired by the legendary, fictional lost island of Atlantis, which just might possibly have been located in the Atlantic Ocean!
