Atlantis Rose is a wine from the volcanic island of Madeira. Atlantis Rose is bottled as a DOP Madeirense (DOP = Denominacao de Origem Protegida Madeirenses). It is made from the Tinta Negra grape variety.
Atlantis Rose is produced by The Madeira Wine Company. The Madeira Wine Company is the umbrella company name for a collection of Madeira wine brand including Blandy’s, Cossart Gordon, Leacocks and Miles Madeira. It is owned by the Blandy family and the CEO is a seventh-generation Blandy, Chris Blandy. The wines are made by Francisco Albuquerque, the award-winning winemaker of Madeira Wine Company who has won best fortified winemaker in the world three times. The Atlantis range has recently expanded to include two white wines, both made from Verdelho and a red wine, made from Tinta Negra.
As mentioned above, Atlantis Rose is made from Tinta Negra which is considered the “workhorse” grape of Madeira. The grapes are sourced from selected growers in the warmer southern vineyards of the Câmara de Lobos, an old fishing village, and the Campanário areas on the island’s south coast. The vineyards here are very steep and generally fashioned into terraces known as “poios”. The grapes have a strong influence from the sun, wind and sea breeze, producing wines with balanced acidity.
After harvest, the grapes were carefully selected, destemmed and cooled to 14ºC. The must was then macerated on the skins for 24h in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 18ºC. Following the separation of the skins, the fermentation got underway at a controlled temperature of 18ºC. The whole vinification process takes 12 days. The wine was then left to rest in cooled stainless steel vats for 4 months, after which it was bottled to retain its freshness and fruity aroma.
The name Atlantis was inspired by the legendary, fictional lost island of Atlantis, which just might possibly have been located in the Atlantic Ocean!
Atlantis Rose is a delicate, pale pink colour with hint of orange. The nose has fresh fruity aromas of strawberries and pomegranates. On the palate this is a fresh and stimulating wine with an intense fruity aftertaste. Dry, fruit and refreshingly crisp.
Excellent as an aperitif or paired with grilled fish, shellfish, pasta and cold salads in the summer.
