Barbadillo Amontillado San Roberto Bota 1/2 Sherry is an extremely rare Amontillado Sherry released as part of Barbadillo’s 200th Anninversary celebrations.
Barbadillo’s origins can be traced back to 1821 when Don Benigno Barbadillo and Don Manuel Lopez Barbadillo settled in Sanlucar de Barrameda in the province of Cadiz. They would release their first wine, the Manzanilla Divina Pastor, in 1827. The Bodegas Barbadillo Company was eventually established in 1954 and today is one of the largest and most respected Sherry, and Spanish Brandy, producers in the world. Today’s seventh winemaking generation own twelve Bodegas, containing some 30,000 Sherry butts, many of which are fed with wines sourced from Palomino Fina grapes cultivated at the family’s 500 hectare Gilbabin and San Luisa vineyards in the Jerez Superior. They now export to over 50 countries and have won numerous awards for its quality and innovation in winemaking. Barbadillo are widely regarded one of the very best producers of Manzanilla Sherries, the salty, tangy Fino-style Sherries produced in Sanlucar de Barrameda.
The Barbadillo Amontillado San Roberto Bota 1/2 Sherry was one of three rare single cask (Bota Unico or single butt) bottlings released for Barnadillo’s 200th Anniversary. The other bottlings were Amontillado and a Palo Cortado. They were all aged in the Barbadillo’s San Roberta bodega, an old bodega in the centre of Sanlucar de Barrameda. The bodega holds the fifth ‘criadera’ of Solear, about 800 butts worth of Sherry, and is a maturing stage in the Solear solera system. However; these three barrels were forgotten about, out of sight of regular visitors and even those who work in the winery. The barrels were not attached to any Solera and have been stand-alone casks for more time than Barbadillo has records on them.
Stylistically, Amontillado sherry is a dry sherry with a nutty flavor. It’s aged longer than Fino sherry, giving it a darker amber colour and richer taste. Amontillado bridges the gap between Fino and Oloroso sherry in terms of dryness and body.
100% Palomino Fino. 21% ABV.
Remarkably light and balanced, it boasts surprising elegance. Aged to perfection it offers remarkable clarity and purity. Hints of smokiness, varnish, toasted hazelnuts. Aa captivating dance between tangy acidity and intense concentration. A superb Amontillado.
