Description

Baron Philippe de Rothschild Mouton Cadet Rouge rouge is made from rigorously selected wines and grapes from partner winegrowers in the main appellations of Bordeaux and the Côtes (Blaye, Bourg, Castillon, etc.). Mouton Cadet is widely considered to be one Bordeaux’s most successful wine brands and was created in 1934. It was one of the biggest brands in the UK and USA throughout the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

In order to maintain constant quality at the highest level for Mouton Cadet, Baron Philippe de Rothschild has implemented an innovative sourcing policy based on parcel selection and partnerships with winegrowers. With the aim of ensuring regular, high-quality supply, in 1992 Baron Philippe de Rothschild started to forge preferential links, on the basis of customised specifications, with over 450 winegrowers farming 1500 hectares (about 3,700 acres) of vines in the region’s various terroirs. The partners benefit from the experience and expertise of Baron Philippe de Rothschild’s winegrowers, who advise and guide them throughout the year, from vine cultivation to deciding the harvest date.

Each Bordeaux wine appellation selected by the Baron Philippe de Rothschild team has a unique terroir, giving it an exceptional range of nuances for making mouton cadet. The limestone soils of Entre-Deux-Mers and the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux produce wines of refinement, while the clay soils around Blaye give fuller-bodied wines. The gravelly soils of Côtes de Bourg and the south of Entre-Deux-Mers bring elegance and freshness to the Cabernet grapes. Mouton Cadet rouge is made from a blend of classic varieties: Merlot (86%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) and Cabernet Franc (4%). Merlot brings roundness and ripe red fruit flavours, Cabernet Sauvignon the tannic structure and touches of black berry fruit, and Cabernet Franc elegance and freshness. It is aged between 6 to 10 months.
