Bernheim Original Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey is the first truly new variety of American straight whiskey introduced since prohibition. The whiskey is made using a high proportion of soft winter wheat for a soft, sweet flavour and medium finish.
Bernheim Original Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey is produced by Heaven Hill Distillers at the namesake Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky and is aged in Rickhouse Y at Heaven Hill’s Bardstown facilities. This ground-breaking wheat whisky was developed by Heaven Hill’s father and son Master Distillers Parker and Craig Beam who developed the wheat formula with a minimum of 51% winter wheat.
Bernheim Original Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey is a small batch whiskey (typically less than 100 barrels per batch) and is bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV). The mashbill is 51% soft winter wheat, 39% corn and 10% barley malt, much higher than “wheated whiskies” such as Old Fitzgerald or Larceny which only use a small amount of wheat. As a straight whiskey, it meets the same criteria as Bourbon or rye – it must be aged a minimum of two years in new, charred oak barrels, distilled at less than 160 proof, and contain no colouring, flavoring or blending agents.
The first batch was released as a 5 year old in 2000. Today it is bottled as a 7 year old whiskey.
