Blackwoods Navy Strength Gin is based upon their fantastic Vintage Dry Gin but is bottled at a Navy Strength of 60% ABV. Navy Strength Gin has seen a great resurgence in popularity among craft distillers and gin enthusiasts who appreciate its bold flavours and versatility in cocktails.
Blackwoods Vintage Dry Gin is the original vintage gin and each year select botanicals from Scotland’s best crops are distilled in small batches using a traditional copper pot still for the ultimate taste of Scotland. Each year, the botanicals are harvested by hand – changing slightly with each harvest due to the quality and quantity available. The 2021 vintage used ingredients from the Scottish Coast including kelp, sweet water mint and sharp, citrusy sea buckthorn, for example.
The original Blackwoods Distillery was founded in Shetland in 2002 with the intention of producing a Shetland Single malt whisky. Sadly, the business went in to administration in 2008. Eventually the brand was acquired by by by Distil Plc, a UK spirit company that also produces, amongst others, Blavod, Redleg Spiced Rum and Trove. Production has been in England for some time but, in 2021, Distil announced that it had sealed a deal with the Ardgowan Distillery, 30 miles west of Glasgow, to establish a new bespoke gin centre at its Inverkip site, which will see production of Blackwoods spirits move back to Scotland.
Blackwoods is dedicated to producing spirits which represent the very best of Scottish produce. The Scottish botanicals for the Blackwoods Navy Strength Gin, kelp, sweet water mint and sea buckthorn, are distilled with a juniper forward base alongside fresh grapefruit and lime, fennel and a pinch of black pepper for a classic gin with a fresh, citrus flavour and a hint of spice. The Navy Strength version has a fuller and more viscous mouthfeel.
What is Navy Strength Gin? Technically speaking, it is any Gin with an ABV above 57.15%. Historically, the ABV at which gunpowder would still burn if any barrels of gin, or rum, stored on board got damaged and leaked onto the gunpowder.
