Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana Vermut is a Spanish Vermouth produced by one of the most famous producers of Manzanilla Sherry.

The La Gitana brand is owned by Bodegas Hildalgo (founded in 1792). They are located in the coastal town of Sanlucar de Barrameda, one of three towns in the “Sherry Triangle” (Jerez and El Puerta del Santa Maria are the other two). The coastal location has a cooling influence and lends a slight, salty tang to their wines. Hidalgo is one of the oldest Sherry producers in existence and their La Gitana Manzanilla is probably one of the most famous and recognisable Manzanilla sherries. Manzanilla is the name given to Fino Sherries from Sanlucar de Barrameda. Although they are most famous for producing Sherry, Hidalgo also make some fantastic Brandy de Jerez and this fantastic Vermouth.

Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana Vermut is based upon a recipe from Hidalgo’s archives for vermouth that was previoulsy used by Hidalgo in 19th and 20th centuries. It is made using their Oloroso Faraon and Pedro Ximenez Triana Sherries, both of which are aged in 100 year old casks and spends at least 12 years in solera. Once the wines are blended, they are then infused with aromatic herbs for another 6 months. Bottled at 15% ABV.

The exact recipe and combination of botanicals used by Bodegas Hidalgo for their La Gitana Vermut is a a closely guarded secret. However, typical botanicals used in vermouth production usually include wormwood, gentian root, citrus peel, cinnamon, cloves as well as various aromatic herbs.

Tasting Notes

Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana Vermut has a deep mahogany colour with deep aromas of spices and citrus flavoured with hints of cinnamon. A perfect balance of bitterness, sweetness and acidity with pleasant botanical notes.

To Serve

This is a lovely vermouth to drink neat or over ice, but it is also brilliant in a Negroni or a Manhattan. Perfect as an aperitif but also works with desserts.
