Description

Briottet Creme de Mure is a blackberry liqueur made in Dijon in Burgundy by Maison Edmond Briottet. Packed full of blackberry aromas and flavours.

Maison Briottet is a family business, founded in 1836, and has been run by the 6th generation of the Briottet family, Claire and Vincent, since 2014. The Maison is located in the centre of the town of Dijon in the Burgundy wine-growing region. Originally, the family were negociants of Burgundy wine, involved with ageing, blending, bottling and selling the wines. Following the development, and massive popularity of the Blanc Cassis Aperitif (white wine with Crème de Cassis also known as a Kir), in the 1900s, the company progressively focused its activities on producing fruit crèmes, liquors, brandies and Marcs de Bourgogne.

Maison Briottet maintains a very high level of quality. It is the selection of the ripest fruit, locally sourced where possible, from the most suitable cultivars that provides for the finest flavours. The first step on the ladder in the process is contracting the right growers to produce the finest, best quality, ripe fruit. Then, at the headquarters, the fruits undergo carefully observed maceration with very pure neutral alcohol and blending with the correct proportion of sugars to achieve the balance between fruit flavour, sweetness, acidity and alcohol to create top of the range crèmes and liqueurs.

Briottet Creme de Mure is made from blackberries, picked when they are ripe and the fruit is black, fleshy, shiny, very juicy and a little sharp. The blackberry bush is a shrub belonging to the same family as the raspberry. Known by the Ancient Greeks and the Romans, the blackberry was not discovered in Europe until the 19th century.

Tasting Notes

A dark purple liqueur called Briottet Creme de Mure is produced by macerating blackberries. It smells rich and fruity on the nose, with hints of sweetness and fresh blackberries. A blast of rich blackberry flavour that is balanced with a hint of sweetness is present on the palate, which is velvety and smooth. There are also subtle hints of spice and citrus that add complexity and depth to the liqueur. The finish is long and satisfying, with a lingering aftertaste of blackberry that is both sweet and tart.

To Serve

A versatile ingredient in cocktails and is also delicious sipped on its own as a digestif.

Try in a Blackberry Bramble cocktail:

  • 5 cl gin
  • 2.5 cl lemon juice
  • 1.5 cl simple syrup
  • 1 cl Briottet Creme de Mure
  • Blackberries, for garnish

Muddle a few blackberries in a shaker, then add gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup. Add ice and shake well. Strain into a glass filled with crushed ice. Drizzle Briottet Creme de Mure on top and garnish with a blackberry and a sprig of mint.
