Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Islay Single Malt Whisky is part of Bunnahabhain’s core range. It was first launched in 1979 and remains a key fixture and a benchmark by which all their other whiskies are measured. Naunces of sweet fruit, nuts, vanilla and a delicate coastal influence.
Bunnahbhain Distillery was established in 1881 on the east coast of Islay just north of the village of Port Askaig. The surrounding village of Bunnahabain weas created to house the distillery’s workers. The distillery was initially supplied by boat and it was not until 1960 that a road was built to the distillery.
Due to a lack of demand the distillery was mothballed in 1981 but was re-opened in 1984 as Scotch Whisky demand picked up again. Burn Stewart acquired the distillery in 2003 and they would merge with the current owners, South African drinks group Distell, in 2014. As well as being well-known South African wine and spirits producers (Nederburg, Durbanville Hills and Three Ships Whisky et al.), they also own Deanston, Ledaig and Tobermory.
Unusually for an Islay whisky the whiskies of Bunnhabhain are known for being unpeated. The water source is the Margadale River. The 12.5 tonne mash tun is one the largest in Scotland. It is in here that barley (ground into grist by the Porteus Mill) is made into wort. The stills are the tallest in Islay with long swan necks – this produces a lighter, more delicate flavour profile. Annual production is two and a half million litres. The core range of whiskies are matured mainly in Sherry casks in old and nre warehouses located alongside the shores of the Sound of Islay.
Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Islay Single Malt Whisky is doubled matured in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks. Bottled at 46.3% ABV, non chill filtered and with no added colouring.
