Caisteal Chamuis 12 Year Old Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is produced by Mossburn Distillers & Blenders. It is a heavily peated and double-barreled whisky blended from a careful selection of fine peated Single Malts distilled on the Islands of Scotland, all aged for 12 years or more, with a Sherry cask finish.

Mossburn Distillers & Blenders is a new Scotch whisky project owned by Marussia Beverages. The company is headquartered at Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders on the site of the former Jedforest Hotel. It is one of the first new distilleries to be built in the Borders for over 180 years. The first phase of development is construction of the Jedhart Distillery, a small distillery featuring three copper stills, five 5,000 square meter warehouse for pallets and casks and a small café. The second phase is construction of the Mossburn Distillery and visitor centre, a large production facility with the capacity to produce 25 million litres of spirit per year. There will also be a larger café and restaurant. Not content with these distilleries, Mossburn has also opened Torabhaig Distillery on the Isle of Skye, the second distillery there after Highland Park, from which Caisteal Chamuis can be seen. line (the spirit has to be aged for at least 3 years before it can even be called whisky) is a long term project. So, in the meantime, Mossburn have started the ball rolling by bottling a small collection of single malt whiskies and two blended malts, an Island and Speyside, with bespoke cask bills. These have now been joined by the Caisteal Chamuis Blended Malt Scotch Whiskies.

Caisteal Chamuis Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is blended from a careful selection of fine Single Malts all distilled on the Scottish Islands and aged for a minimum of 12 years.

  • Aged for a full 12 years in refill American oak Hogsheads.
  • First re-aged in American Oak 230 litre barrels that held Oloroso for five full years and were shipped directly from a Bodega in Jerez de la Frontera.
  • Secondly re-aged in specially coopered European Oak 500 litre Butts which form an aging solera. These butts were also seasoned with Oloroso Sherry in Spain.
  • Bottled at 46% abv without any colouring or chill filtration.

Caisteal Chamuis, pronounced ‘Kasch-teil Ham-oosh’ in Gaelic and Castle Camus in English, is named after a castle on Skye which was once a strategic stronghold that helped Clan Macleod secure their hold over the Sleat peninsula.

Tasting Notes

Nose: The first note is one of rich beeswax. Boiled sweets too and then fragrant, light peat undertones with hints of coal tar.

Palate: Soft and smooth. Peaty, yet not medicinal; a complex fragrant, heathery, lavender-like peat. Fascinatingly complex with florality, then sweet, toffee-d coal tar notes emerging and finally evolving into a finish of concentrated sherry, crystallised fruit, more peat and an oily beeswax.
