Description

Caisteal Chamuis Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is a new whiskey produced by Mossburn Distillers & Blenders. It is a heavily peated and double-barreled whisky blended from a selection of Island malts, a tribute to Hebridean life and lore, and reminds us of a time of peat fires, lively company, and bold spirits.

Mossburn Distillers & Blenders is a new Scotch whisky project owned by Marussia Beverages. The company is headquartered at Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders on the site of the former Jedforest Hotel. It is one of the first new distilleries to be built in the Borders for over 180 years. The first phase of development is construction of the Jedhart Distillery, a small distillery featuring three copper stills, five 5,000 square meter warehouse for pallets and casks and a small café. The second phase is construction of the Mossburn Distillery and visitor centre, a large production facility with the capacity to produce 25 million litres of spirit per year. There will also be a larger café and restaurant. Not content with these distilleries, Mossburn has also opened Torabhaig Distillery on the Isle of Skye, the second distillery there after Highland Park, from which Caisteal Chamuis can be seen. line (the spirit has to be aged for at least 3 years before it can even be called whisky) is a long term project. So, in the meantime, Mossburn have started the ball rolling by bottling a small collection of single malt whiskies and two blended malts, an Island and Speyside, with bespoke cask bills. These have now been joined by the Caisteal Chamuis Blended Malt Scotch Whiskies.

Caisteal Chamuis Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is blended from a careful selection of fine Single Malts all distilled on Islay, Orkney and Skye, including Torabhaig for the this bottling, the no age statement whisky. Mossburn uses an interesting barrel ageing process:

  • Double Barrelled – First Fill Bourbon Finish
  • First aged in refill and first-fill American Oak Hogsheads
  • Two stage re-aging in Virgin American Oak barrels, with Fresh Oloroso Sherry European Oak Heads & refill Hogsheads
  • Final ageing finish in fresh Bourbon Barrels

Bottled at 46% abv without any colouring or chill filtration. This is a no age statement whisky, there is also a Caisteal Chamuis 12 Year Old.

Caisteal Chamuis, , pronounced ‘Kasch-teil Ham-oosh’ in Gaelic and Castle Camus in English, is named after a castle on Skye which was once a strategic stronghold that helped Clan Macleod secure their hold over the Sleat peninsula.

Tasting Notes

Nose: A fragrant, layered, complex nose; floral particularly with aromas of white flowers. Beguilingly deep, with a honeyed peaty character and undertones of white pepper.

Palate: The layers reveal themselves slowly; it’s soft, smooth peat to start; without becoming medicinal; then honeyed peppery notes, complex sweet spice and finishing with creamy vanilla. Complex and soft yet characterful with good creamy notes of pepper and vanilla emerging on the finish.

To Serve

Try in an old fashioned or highball.
