Casamigos Reposado Tequila is made from 100% Blue Weber Agave (Agave Azul) in the Mexican state of Jalisco. It is co-owned by best friends Hollywood star George Clooney, businessman Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman hence the name, amigos = friends. Their idea was to set about creating the smoothest, cleanest and best tasting tequila possible, one that wouldn’t need to be taken with salt and lime. The three friends worked with a master distiller (Productos Finos de Agave) located in the cool highland climate of Jalisco to develop Casamigos Tequila. It was never destined to be sold to the general public but eventually found its way onto the open market and is now available for everyone to buy. Tequila itself is a type of Mezcal which can only be produced in the state of Jaliscolimited municipalities in the states of Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas. To make Casamigos Tequila the Blue Weber Agava piñas (the succulent core of the plant, outer leaves trimmed away) are roasted for 72 hours in traditional brick ovens. Other producers steam theirs for 7 hours. This roasting process introduces different flavours into the tequila. The roasted agave is shredded or pulped to and the juice extracted. It is this juice that is fermented. For Casamigos a special yeast blend is used to ferment the juice to produce a consistent, refined flavour, compared to those who used commercial yeasts. The juice (or wort, or mosto) is allowed to undergo an extra slow fermentation of 80 hours compared to the usual 48 hours. Finally the alcoholic wort is distilled in a still, most likely twice, and the collected tequila is then aged in oak barrels. The Casamigos Reposado Tequila is aged for 7 months in premium white oak barrels. All of the extra care and attention makes this a fantastically flavoursome yet clean and pure tequila. Buy because it has Clooney’s names is on the label, or don’t, its up to you, but don’t forget that Clooney’s share of the profits go towards his charity Satellite Sentinel, which uses satellite technology to document and report atrocities in Sudan.
