Champagne Taittinger Comtes de Champagne is the flagship wine of this historic Champagne house. It is the finest example of the Taittinger House style and is always a vintage cuvée. It is made with 100% white grapes from the 5 villages with a Grands Crus classification for the Chardonnay grape (Avize, Chouilly, Cramant, Oger, Mesnil-sur-Oger).
Champagne Taittinger can trace its origins back to the original house founded in 1734 by Jacques Fourneaux. However its links to the Taittinger family started in 1931 when it was purchased by the founder of today’s company; Pierre Taittinger. Today it remains owned and managed by the Taittinger family and is headed up by Pierre Emmanuel Taittinger. Pierre Emmanuel’s son, Clovis Taittinger and daughter, Vitalie Taittinger both work in the business making it very much a family affair. The Taittinger headquarters are in Reims, situated above magnificent 4th Century Roman cellars which at one time belonged to the Benedictine monks of the abbey of St Nicaise. Its miles of tunnels and cellars are perfect for the slow but necessary ageing process involved in making this great Champagne.
Champagne Taittinger Comtes de Champagne is only produced when all the conditions, essential to its unique style, are met: the harvest must be of exceptional quality and worthy of vintage champagne and it is made exclusively from 100% Chardonnay grapes from the most renowned vineyards of the Côte des Blancs. Only wines from the first pressing (La Cuvée) are used. This guarantees the wine’s finesse. 5% of the blend is aged in fresh oak barrels to create the very delicate balance of toasted notes in the final wine. Taittinger knows it must be patient with these great Chardonnays, which are the crowning glory of its terroir; the Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs remains for up to 10 years in the chalk quarries beneath Saint-Nicaise, before emerging to ignite and delight the palates of wine-lovers. Minimum ageing of 8 years. Following disgorgement, a “dosage” of 9g per litre creates a dry style wine.
From Taittinger:
“The moment you open this 2011 vintage, a special occasion in itself, it lives up to all expectations. It is a unique sensory experience, a visual and gustatory delight! With a beautiful golden shimmer through colours of straw yellow and reflections of gold; the mousse is fine, delicate, creamy and captivating.
The nose takes you into a world of maturity and voluptuousness. It exhales delicious notes of gingerbread, liquorice and meringue. This Comtes de Champagne delivers aromas of delicate white fruit: vine peach, cherimoya and mandarin peel subtly blended with light touches of almond pastry.
A wine of great mineral power, dense and rich with Chardonnays flexing their iodine character. The generous palate is built upon a chalky structure, giving it charm and precision. This smooth wine takes you on a journey through aromas of candied fruit and sweet spices like aniseed and coriander.”
Perfect for a special celebration, this champagne is the ideal match for a seafood, shellfish or fish entrée.
