Description

Champagne Veuve Clicquot Rich is a new non-vintage release for 2016. If you have enjoyed the Moet et Chandon Ice Imperial (also owned by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy) that is designed to be drunk over ice, then you will enjoy this Champagne too which is also designed to be drunk over ice, with different garnishes and to appeal to mixologists!

Clicquot was founded in 1772 by Phillipe Clicquot, but it would be his daughter-in-law, Barbe Nicole Ponsardin, who made the Champagne house famous. She married Phillipe’s son, Francois and when he died in 1798, the widow Clicquot decided to continue her husband’s legacy. She became the driving force of the company and in 1810 it was renamed Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin. The “Grand Dame of Champagne”, as she became know, was always in pursuit of excellence and innovation and, although it is a very old and traditional company, it is not surprising that they are introducing new ways of drinking Champagne to the public.

Champagne Veuve Clicquot Rich, as the name might suggest is a richer and sweeter style of Champagne with a dosage of 60g/L. Compare this to the Yellow Label Brut (around 9 g/L), the Demi Sec and even Moet Ice (both 45 g/L). This comfortably puts this over the 50 g/L required to make this a Doux Champagne. The wine has a high proportion of reserve wines (25 to 35%) and a good proportion of Pinot Noir. The cuvee is 45% Pinot Noir, 40% Pinot Meunier and 15% Chardonnay. It is the extra sweetness and the fuller and richer reserve wines and greater Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier components which allows the Champagne to stand up to being served over ice not be over-powered by various garnishes.

Veuve Clicquot recommend filling a large glass full of ice cubes and adding one of the following garnishes: 3 or 4 slices of cucumber, a couple of batons of red or green pepper or celery, 5 or 6 pineapple cubes, lime, ginger or some grapefruit zest. Then top up the glass with the well-chilled Champagne. They also say that it can be poured through flavoured or non-flavoured tea leaves. Of course, as a Champagne Doux it can just be served as a normal Champagne for anyone who likes a sweeter style and it is also a great match for all sorts of desserts. It is also presented in a rather fancy, shiny silver coated bottle. Great fun!

Not to be confused with Clicquot’s Vintage Rich Champagne which has a much lower dosage of 28 g/L.
