Chartreuse de Coutet is the second wine of Chateau Coutet.
The term Chartreuse refers to a fortress located in Château Coutet’s most southern plots. The building dates back to the 11th Century. According to local stories, it was named after the “Chartreux” priests, who lived in this fortress. La Chartreuse de Coutet is vinted from vines with an average age of 15 years. The result is a young, beautiful wine full of vivacity and freshness. Just like all of the property’s wines (Château Coutet’s 1er Cru Classé and La Cuvée Madame), the manual harvest consists of picking individual berries. A succession of passages allows the fruit to be picked at the optimal moment of maturity and concentration. The grapes are pressed three times consecutively and the juice is left to rest for one night. Then the juice is placed in new French oak barrels where the alcoholic fermentation takes place during an 18 month aging process. This is a blend of 75% Sémillon, 23% Sauvignon and 2% Muscadelle. A great dessert wine.
